Al Jalal Masjid Mosque

Al Jalal Masjid Mosque

Al Jalal Masjid is a very important place of worship for the Muslim community in Luton. Initially SMD was contracted to carry out the brickwork for a rear extension, but later in the project we also secured the Roof Package and Mechanical Systems work for the main building. This project was very bespoke in its nature because it involved a collaboration not only with the client team, but also a third party, acting as Principal Contractor.

Our Responsibilities

SMD initially carried out brickwork for the rear extension and then the Roof Package for the main building. This included a new structural timber mansard and flat roof decks, along with single ply roof finishes over the new second floor extension. The roof was constructed with integrated bespoke arched window profiles, which is a common feature of mosques.

The Mechanical Systems included the new installation, testing and commissioning of the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning services. These incorporated a hybrid design, utilising both natural and mechanical means, in support of the client’s preferred operations.

Due to being a community-led project, there were a large number of stakeholders involved. Following proactive communication and a robust management process with key members of the project, we were able to mitigate and manage this risk. SMD coordinated and helped manage the structural and architectural design process to ensure that all details were addressed and understood prior to commencing works on site. This allowed for a fluid and continuous working sequence to meet the strict deadline agreed with the client.

Another consideration was the party wall agreement with the local Veterinary Practice. A significant amount of the alteration works was along this affected elevation, so we ensured that engagement with the neighbour was a key focus and that implementation of boundary related issues were executed as planned.
